Trade Study Demonstrates Importance of San Antonio Exports
San Antonio TX – The Media Policy Program at Brookings in Washington, D.C. has released its latest trade profile for San Antonio in its current issue of “Export Nation”. The profile demonstrates the importance of trade and specifically why “metro” exports are important to the local and national economy. While nationally over the last several decades, job prospects have stagnated; the same cannot be said for industries in Texas – specifically, in San Antonio. San Antonio produces $6.5 billion in exports, expanding annually at 12%, yet still remains behind other parts of the country. As noted by Kyle Burns, President & CEO of Free Trade Alliance, “The 12% growth rate in exports from the San Antonio metro area from 2003 through 2008, which outpaces the national average, is yet another positive indicator of San Antonio’s continued growth and robust economy. San Antonio still lags the nation in exports as a percentage of gross metropolitan product, 7.8% versus 11.4%, so we still have plenty of room for growth. Working with our community partners, Free Trade Alliance intends to further close the gap and continue creating job opportunities related to exports.”
Contributing to the increase in exports are the five industries most supported by the San Antonio Metro Area: Transportation Equipment Manufacturing, Tourism, Business, Professional and Technical Services, Chemical Manufacturing and Royalties from Intellectual Properties. This is good news for San Antonio and the surrounding area.
